Turning a Poultry Packaging Problem into a Money Maker

The Challenge

The poultry processing industry has used waxed corrugated containers for many years to ship their products to market. The wax protects the containers from being weakened during shipping by water, ice, frost and poultry fluids. Even those poultry products that were initially packaged with an inner bag to extend product freshness were shipped in waxed boxes. However, the wax on the boxes proved to be a major issue because it prevented the retail supermarket industry from recycling containers and actually created wax waste disposal costs.

The IP Innovation
International paper developed a wax-free container, called ClassicPak® 7WF, for poultry products that use an inner bag. This unique corrugated box is fully recyclable and fully repulpable. So it not only eliminates wax waste disposal costs, it enables recycling revenues.

ClassicPak 7WF delivers complete water/vapor barrier protection in typical wet processing environments to provide poultry processors and their customers with optimum product protection throughout the supply chain. It sheds free water and frost while providing the required compression strength. And it’s ergonomically friendly, with “slip-grip” top and bottom surfaces that keep the boxes stacked straight and reduce the need for workers to restack them.
