Shorewood Packaging's parent company, International Paper (IP) has been a leader in the paper and forest products industry for more than 100 years. During that time, IP has been dedicated to bettering people's lives today and safeguarding the environment for future generations.
greenchoice™ is the newest and most comprehensive eco-friendly packaging program among a rich history of environmental stewardship that includes numerous achievements.
- IP was named number one in the Forest and Paper Products sector in Fortune's annual report of "America's Most Admired Companies" for five consecutive years (2002-2007). - Its fiber-based corrugated packaging is manufactured from sustainable resources and designed for true cradle-to-cradle recovery and recycling, which reduces your environmental footprint
- 60-70 percent of the energy IP uses in its manufacturing is from bio-renewable resources, including bark, sawdust and other byproducts of the trees it harvests.
- Most of the paper and board Shorewood packaging uses is produced from fiber that is sourced through IP's Sustainable Forestry Industry (SFI) and ISO14001 certified fiber procurement system.
- Every acre harvested is renewed (reforested) by systematic replanting or managed natural regeneration - 400 million hardwood and pine tree seedlings grown each year.
- IP has a longstanding policy of using no wood from old growth or endangered forests.
- IP is among the charter members of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Environmental Performance Track program, which recognizes facilities that consistently exceed regulatory requirements, work closely with their communities and excel in protecting the environment and public health.
- IP is also a charter member of the EPA's Climate Leader's Partnership, which encourages companies to develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies and set greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction goals.
- IP regularly reports the results of its GHG and has established a goal of reducing absolute GHG emissions by 15 percent by the year 2010.
- IP partners with more than 100 environmental, business, academic and government organizations on various environmental issues. Click here to see a partial list of partners.
- Each year, IP publishes a Sustainability Update, which reports the progress it has made in protecting its environment.

- Shorewood Packaging eliminated volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and is eliminating the use of quick-dry glues with ozone depleting substances (ODS).
- Shorewood ink and coating systems are "green," with little or no waste generated during the manufacturing process.
- Each year, Shorewood Packaging sends more than 60,000 tons of paper and board back into the manufacturing stream by shipping pre-consumer waste from our manufacturing processes to a Recycler for recycling.
