Unboxing 2025's Sustainable Packaging Trends
Sustainable packaging has evolved rapidly - a trend not slowing down in 2025. International Paper is excited to be on the forefront of packaging innovations that make the world safer and healthier, helping deliver sustainable solutions to your customers’ door.
“Paperization”: There has been a significant shift in consumer preference for paper-based packaging materials instead of plastics. This trend stems from the desire to reduce long-term waste and plastic pollution in the ocean. You may only think of International Paper for your average, everyday box, or a regular slotted container (RSC) for those familiar with the ins and outs of boxes, but International Paper has many products that serve to replace or reduce plastic packaging.
- Molded fiber is a great alternative to non-sustainable(?) protective packaging for everything from electronics and wine to beauty products and packaged foods. After our molded fiber arrives at your customers’ door, it can be recycled or composted.
- The paper bag is another clear winner for an easy way to reduce plastic, while also meeting the needs of the customer. Our kraft carry sacks are used in grocery stores and restaurants and can be tossed into the recycling bin or composted at home.
- SpaceKraft, one of our liquid bulk container options, is a great way to reduce plastic in your bulk packaging and utilize a package that recyclable and can withstand 50,000 lbs. (about twice the weight of a school bus) of compression.
Transparency and Traceability: Consumers care about the environmental impact of the packaging they use. Brands that provide clear information about sourcing, production and disposal of their packaging are better positioned to gain consumer trust and loyalty. All fiber that enters the International Paper supply chain is traceable. Additionally, a portion of our fiber supply carries forestry certifications. All other fiber is tracked through our proprietary, third-party verified, GIS-based forest conservation and mapping tool, ForSite.
Minimalist Packaging: When it comes to packaging, maximalism is out, and minimalism is in! The American Marketing Association conducted a study that found a growing preference for packaging designed to reduce waste while still offering the same protective features using less material. This trend emphasizes simplicity and functionality with a “less is more mindset.” Additionally, 98% of our packaging products are curbside recyclable, reducing consumer uncertainty on environmentally responsible disposal.
Reusable Packaging: Reusable packaging solutions like refillable containers and returnable packaging systems are becoming more attractive to eco-conscious consumers. However, what many consumers don’t realize is that corrugated packaging can have multiple lives before it goes into the recycling stream. Depending on the use-case, fiber-based packaging can be re-used in a variety of different situations.
Biodegradable and Compostable Materials: Consumers want to know their packaging is safe and not harmful to the Earth. This desire means consumers are seeking out packaging that can break down naturally without harming the environment. The best end-of-life solution for corrugated paper packaging is the recycling stream. However, if it accidentally lands in the environment, the paper will break down naturally without causing harm to the ecosystem and living creatures.
Regulatory Compliance: With Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws soon taking effect in several states, companies are focusing on compliance with new packaging regulations that discourage single-use plastics and incentivize the use of highly recycled materials. While the specifics of these EPR laws differ, corrugated packaging will be a clear winner because lawmakers recognize it is highly RECYCLABLE as well as highly RECYCLED.
As we glide into 2025, the push for sustainable packaging is stronger than ever. Innovations focused on paper-based solutions, sustainability transparency, and reusable designs are transforming the way packaging is meeting and exceeding industry and consumer expectations. At International Paper, we're dedicated to leaning into these shifting sustainable packaging trends, offering environmentally friendly solutions that benefit both businesses and the planet.
Together, we can build a more sustainable future for all.
