International Paper boxes out hunger in partnership with The Global FoodBanking Network and Feeding America for World Food Day

October 15, 2024

International Paper (IP) is committed to addressing hunger and food security for children, families and seniors. In partnership with The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) and Feeding America ®, we’re supporting food banks across the globe to highlight food security needs on World Food Day (WFD).

Food has the power to create change, but we don’t all have equal access to food. We are living in a world in which around 30% of the global population is moderately or severely food insecure, with more than 280 million people facing severe hunger. The food produced globally could aid in this issue. However, one-third of food is lost or wasted globally every year [1]. Food loss and waste also has significant implications for the climate crisis, as it is responsible for half the food system’s greenhouse gas emissions.

That’s why IP is working with GFN and Feeding America to provide food for communities, food for nutrition, food for climate resilience, food for a better future. By partnering with food banks in communities, gaps can be filled to provide immediate food access and reduce waste. In 2023 alone, IP contributed more than 10 million meals and nearly 400,000 boxes collectively to GFN and Feeding America.

In 2023, IP along with GFN and others worked to provide food and grocery products to 40 million people, nearly 10 million more people than in 2022. IP supports GFN networks where it operates in Canada, Chile, Italy, France, Mexico, Poland and Spain. Over 200,000 people have been served in these areas.

Through Feeding America, the United States’ largest domestic hunger relief organization, IP supports family hunger and disaster relief programs through donations and employee volunteer activities in their local communities.

In 2023, International Paper supported Feeding America® with a $550,000 financial commitment. This commitment included support to #HelpFillTheBoxes with $200,000 allocated to support local food banks in the Feeding America® network in communities where IP employees live and work. We also committed $250,000 to GFN to support over 3 million meals.
