International Paper has recently been presented by the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) with a global Papyrus Award for exceptional contributions and leadership in paper recycling. BIR represents more than 30,000 companies worldwide and is considered the largest and most prestigious international recycling federation.

The award ceremony was held in Copenhagen, chosen this year as the venue for BIR's Annual Convention, where awards were given in each of the five raw material areas that BIR covers. More specifically, International Paper was honored for its dedication to sustainable practices and its contribution to the advancement of the paper recycling sector. José Chimeno, General Manager of Carpa, International Paper's Madrid-based recycling business, collected the award.

International Paper, one of the world's largest recycling companies, collects, sorts, and processes more than 6 million metric tons of recovered paper and cardboard worldwide each year. In Spain, with more than 40 years of dedicated experience, Carpa (Carton y Papel Reciclado, S.A.), provides nearly 480,000 tons of recovered paper to International Paper’s mill in Fuenlabrada (Madrid) where it is transformed into recycled containerboard and then converted into new packaging by our network of corrugated box plants in the region as part of a circular economy cycle.

It promotes free trade, environmentally responsible resource management and the use of recycled materials worldwide. BIR also encourages manufacturers to take recycling possibilities into account when designing their products. The bureau covers several areas of raw materials within five divisions: iron and steel, non-ferrous metals, paper, plastics and textiles.
